Fueling Performance: The Role of Smart Nutrition

I fed my body everything it didn't need for years. Macro-based nutrition isn't a diet — it's finally learning how to actually fuel yourself.

What I Ate During Addiction Wasn’t Eating

When you’re in active addiction, food is an afterthought. You’re running on stimulants, cortisol, and whatever happens to be in front of you during the comedown. I spent years destroying my body’s nutritional baseline before I even understood what a macro was. Getting sober on December 28, 2016 didn’t automatically fix my relationship with food — it just gave me the clarity to finally start paying attention to it.

The Shift After Sobriety

When I stopped using and went back to operating cranes sober — 10-hour days, physical labor, real demand on my body — I started noticing how much what I ate actually mattered. Energy levels, mental clarity, strength in the cab. Nutrition wasn’t a fitness topic anymore. It was a daily performance lever I’d been ignoring.

  • Sobriety gave me the mental clarity to actually feel what food was doing to my body

  • Physical labor at that scale demands real fuel — coffee and adrenaline don’t hold up

  • The shift from surviving on nothing to fueling deliberately changed everything about how I felt and performed

Why I Build Macro-Based Plans

I don’t build elimination diets or run extreme restriction cycles. I’ve watched that pattern in myself and in clients — deprive, binge, shame, repeat. Macro-based eating works because it’s calibrated to your actual body and life. Hit your numbers, eat real food, and stop treating every meal like a moral test.

  • Protein targets that support muscle retention and keep hunger in check

  • Carbohydrates as fuel for training output, not as an enemy to be eliminated

  • Fat intake balanced for hormone function and sustained satiety

How I Build Client Nutrition Plans

Every plan I build is customized. Your macros come from your body composition, your training volume, and your day-to-day life — not a template. A person working 10-hour shifts on a job site has completely different nutritional needs than someone working from home. I have been both. I build accordingly.

Sustainable Over Perfect

A meal plan you can’t follow on a Thursday night with three kids and no food prep done is not a meal plan — it’s theater. I build flexibility into the structure. 80/20 adherence over a year produces more transformation than perfect execution for 30 days followed by a crash. Consistency is always the goal.

  • You don’t need to eat perfectly — you need to eat consistently over time

  • Build your nutrition around your actual schedule, not around ideal conditions

  • One bad meal doesn’t break a program any more than one session builds a body

Nutrition in the Full Picture

Food is one input in a larger system — it supports the training, it supports recovery, and it keeps mental state more stable. If you’ve ever come out of active addiction, you know exactly how important that last one is. Nutrition isn’t separate from the transformation. It’s woven through all of it.

  • Stable blood sugar has a direct effect on mood, cravings, and decision-making

  • Protein timing around training affects recovery quality more than most supplements ever will

  • What you eat the night before determines a meaningful part of your performance the next morning

The Practical Reality

My clients aren’t professional athletes managing nothing but their performance. They are parents, blue-collar workers, people with real jobs and actual lives. Nutrition guidance that doesn’t account for that isn’t guidance — it’s a fantasy that works in an empty week and collapses the moment life gets real. I keep it practical because practical is the only thing that actually holds over time.
